  1. Tips that have made you a success? Focus and determination, treating everyone as an equal (they're 'only' people, right?), straight talking (the last one also gets me into trouble occasionally)

  2. How did you get into the sector? Standing (wistfully) outside the Midland Hotel in Manchester as a child, wishing I could be part of it

  3. Career high? Making profit in our first year despite opening our doors the day before 9/11 

  4. Career low? Having your own business is full of highs and lows - the trick is not to let anything bring you down 

  5. What are your plans for the next year? We have exciting plans for our talent management tech, Talent Toolbox (watch this space).  The people strategy  / leadership consultancy part of our business is also very buoyant, so more and more interesting projects, whilst continuing to stay ahead of the thought leadership curve  

  6. What advice would you give to people keen to progress in the industry? Look for a company with a purpose with values that resonate with your own, that will allow you the freedom to make a difference whilst being clear about the guidelines, offering support when you need it. In an environment like that, the rest will come. Failing that, call Core.

  7. What question do you always ask in interviews? Tell me about a time when...

  8. If you woke up and had 2,000 unread emails and could only answer 300 of them how would you choose which ones to answer? I read super-fast so would skim read them all and deal with the 300 that would have the most impact

  9. What’s your favourite website? Amazon Prime

  10. How do you motivate others? Role model the behaviours I ask of them and, when I mess up, admit it fast and fix it faster 

  11. What three things do you need to be successful in this job? Big picture thinking, bravery, being organised. What are deal killers for you? Duplicity

  12. How do you define success and how do you measure up to your own definition? Successful people are always onto the next thing so I never feel I'm there yet, it's probably about making a difference, profitably

  13. Who has inspired you in your life and why? Sahar Hashimi (co-founder of Coffee Republic) who said "Leap and the net will appear" -  weirdly accurate

  14. Would you rather be liked or respected? Respected

  15. What’s the worst thing about your current job and what’s the best? My job is 'the best', though I'd like to be able to make some time to do another book

  16. What are you looking for in a candidate? The right attitude

  17. What does career progression look like within the business unit for which you are hiring? No limits, people can take whatever path suits them 

  18. Tell me something that you probably shouldn’t tell me.  In my head, I'm half my actual age

  19. What’s something your brain tries to make you do and you must will yourself not to do it? See previous response!
